Special Vehicles - Chief Technical Engineer

Apply now Job no: 512240
Work type: Full Time - Permanent
Location: Gaydon, Warwickshire
Categories: Commercial, Research and Development Engineering, Various, Vehicle Engineering

There are engineering roles… and then there are roles where you set the direction for everything that follows. This is one of those.

We’re looking for a Special Vehicles Chief Technical Engineer to lead the vehicle engineering, someone who doesn’t just influence decisions, but defines them. Someone who can look across an SV cycle plan and confidently say, this is what great looks like, and here’s how we deliver it. You’ll be the technical backbone across multiple programmes, guiding teams from early concept all the way through to launch, ensuring what we build is not only right first time, but genuinely world-class.

You’ll operate as the principal technical authority across the SV business, setting technical standards, shaping architectures, and defining long-term engineering direction. Working across engineering, product planning, manufacturing, purchasing and quality, you’ll bring alignment across functions, ensuring everything comes together at a system level rather than in silos. You’ll lead critical design reviews, steer validation strategies, and resolve complex engineering challenges, bringing clarity to ambiguity and confidence to key decisions.

This role goes beyond delivery. You’ll play a central part in driving innovation, influencing future technology roadmaps, and ensuring we remain competitive in a fast-moving, global automotive landscape. At the same time, you’ll be responsible for developing technical capability across the organisation, mentoring both SV engineers and Q By Aston Martin bespoke engineers, defining standards, and building a culture where engineering excellence is consistently delivered.

You’ll bring a strong engineering foundation with deep experience across whole vehicle development, along with a proven track record of delivering multiple technical programmes within automotive environments. You’ll be confident navigating complex product development processes, from early scoping and requirements through to system integration, validation, and production. Experience with automotive quality frameworks such as 8D and APQP will be important, as will your ability to operate within a matrix organisation, leading cross-functional teams, resolving complex issues, and making sound decisions under pressure.

You’ll also bring the ability to simplify complexity, taking large amounts of technical information and translating it into clear, actionable direction. Strong communication and influencing skills will be key, enabling you to engage at all levels while driving alignment and progress. A natural collaborator, you’ll bring people together, manage competing priorities, and create solutions that deliver for both the business and the customer.

Experience working with suppliers or delivering bespoke or specialist vehicles derived from core OEM platforms would be advantageous, though not essential. A degree in Engineering (or equivalent) is required.

This role suits someone who takes true ownership, sees the bigger picture, and thrives in an environment where they are trusted to make impactful decisions. Someone who can balance technical depth with strategic thinking, bring structure to complexity, and lead with both credibility and influence.

If you’re ready to shape technical direction, not just follow it, this is your opportunity. Apply now!
