Job Purpose

We are seeking an experienced SET Project Engineer – Exterior Trim to lead the design specification, development, and delivery of body commodities across the vehicle programme. You will take ownership of ensuring component compatibility with all system attributes and performance targets, working closely with cross‑functional internal teams and external suppliers to deliver high‑quality solutions within cost, quality, and timing constraints.

This is a highly visible role, offering the opportunity to influence vehicle design from concept through to production and present technical content up to CTO level.

Key Responsibilities

You will own and deliver Body Commodity components, systems, and features from concept through to launch, taking accountability for meeting programme requirements. The role involves leading the commodity strategy to achieve financial targets, delivering high‑quality components, and ensuring adherence to programme timing.

You will coordinate and manage failure mode prevention activities, including DFMEA, QHRs, Lessons Learned, and Design Manuals, while providing surface compatibility feedback to concept and design teams. You will lead the design of commodities to meet functional and performance targets, agreeing validation and DVP plans across both virtual and physical phases, including the design and support of bucks and rigs for FMA.

The position requires leading cross‑functional design reviews and managing both virtual and physical build phases, ensuring robust issue identification and resolution. You will manage and distribute the creation of 3D and 2D CAD models, including GD&T, using internal and external resources, and lead the creation of archetypes across multiple vehicle platforms.

You will liaise directly with potential and existing suppliers to assess manufacturing feasibility and drive optimal technical solutions. Competitive benchmarking activities will be undertaken to identify best‑in‑class solutions, with findings clearly presented to senior management.

As the releasing engineer, you will be responsible and accountable for managing engineering data within the PLM system. You will apply strong problem‑solving skills to overcome programme challenges relating to cost, timing, and DVP delivery, including leading chronic and complex root cause analysis and developing contingency plans.

The role requires confident presentation of technical information to stakeholders at all levels, up to and including CTO. You will investigate and support issue resolution during prototype, pre‑production, and production phases of the vehicle lifecycle. You will also create and manage high‑quality engineering documentation, including FESO documentation, ensuring strong cross‑functional alignment throughout the product creation process.

Skills, Experience & Qualifications

Essential:

  • Significant experience in Project or Product Engineering within an automotive environment
  • Strong knowledge of automotive product creation systems, including specification, releasing, concerns, gateways, and sign‑off documentation
  • Proven experience delivering engineering content from concept to vehicle launch
  • Extensive understanding of manufacturing processes such as injection moulding, composites, pressings, castings, and extrusions relevant to owned commodities
  • Strong experience with DFMEA, virtual builds, QHRs, and quality‑led development
  • Solid understanding of CAE analysis and its application in driving design decisions
  • Experience in material selection, gap & flush analysis, fixing strategies, and perceived quality targets
  • Excellent problem‑solving, decision‑making, and data analysis skills
  • Confident communicator with the ability to influence and present at senior leadership level
  • Enthusiastic, resilient, and passionate about delivering high‑quality products

Desirable:

  • Degree qualified in Engineering or equivalent demonstrable experience
