Motion Control Functional Safety Engineer

Apply now Job no: 512368
Work type: Full Time - Permanent
Location: Wellesbourne
Categories: Vehicle Engineering

As vehicles become more connected, intelligent and technologically advanced, functional safety has never been more important.

At Aston Martin, we're looking for a Motion Control Functional Safety Engineer to help ensure the next generation of our luxury high-performance vehicles are developed to the highest standards of safety, reliability and engineering excellence.

This is an opportunity to join a specialist team responsible for Motion Control System & Software Development, working on technologies that sit at the heart of modern vehicle development. Our customers place immense trust in Aston Martin and this role plays a vital part in ensuring that trust is earned through safe, robust and compliant engineering solutions.

Working within our Electrical and E/E Technology function, you'll help drive the application of ISO 26262 on Motion Control Systems across vehicle programmes, ensuring functional safety considerations are embedded throughout the development process. With a particular focus on powertrain, vehicle dynamics and chassis control functions, you'll collaborate with engineers across the organisation to support the delivery of innovative technologies while ensuring safety remains at the forefront of every decision.

Working closely with both the Motion Control Systems development team and the Central Functional Safety team, this role acts as the key interface between product development and functional safety governance. Reporting directly to the Motion Control Systems Manager, you'll help shape engineering decisions from concept through to production, providing expert guidance that enables programmes to achieve their safety objectives whilst maintaining performance, quality and innovation while maintaining alignment with company-wide safety strategies, processes and governance.

Within this role, you will champion Functional Safety within the Motion Control Systems team, developing work products and supporting system engineers, software engineers and component owners throughout the development lifecycle. Equally, you will represent Motion Control within the Central Functional Safety community, ensuring safety-related risks, decisions, work products and deliverables are effectively delivered, communicated, coordinated and managed across both organisations.

As the Motion Control Functional Safety focal point, you will be accountable for Functional Safety activities and deliverables across the Motion Control domain for the duration of vehicle programmes, ensuring that all required ISO 26262 work products are planned, developed and delivered in line with gateway process. You will provide guidance on Functional Safety processes, expected deliverables and quality standards, support reviews and audits, and work closely with Central Functional Safety specialists to continuously improve safety engineering capability across the organisation.

We're looking for someone who enjoys solving complex technical challenges and influencing positive outcomes across multidisciplinary teams. You'll help develop and improve Aston Martin's functional safety processes, support competence development through training and coaching, and provide functional safety leadership for Motion Control across assigned programmes.

To succeed in this role, you'll already have experience within Functional Safety, Systems Engineering, Electronics Engineering, Software Engineering or a similar discipline, alongside a strong understanding of safety-related systems and demonstrable knowledge of ISO 26262. You'll understand how complex vehicle systems are developed from concept through to production and be comfortable working across multiple engineering disciplines to deliver safety-critical solutions.

Experience relating to vehicle powertrain, vehicle dynamics, chassis control systems, motion control technologies or advanced driver control functions will be particularly valuable. We're especially interested in candidates who can combine strong technical capability with a collaborative mindset as well as the flexibility and open-mindedness to balance product development priorities with Functional Safety requirements, building effective relationships across engineering disciplines and organisational boundaries.

Experience supporting hazard analysis and risk assessments, developing safety concepts and requirements on requirements management tools, creating safety cases, conducting safety analyses such as FMEA and FTA, and supporting and running verification and validation activities (e.g. via ETAS/Vector toolset) on different assets (e.g. CAE, SIL, HIL, Powertrain HIL, Vehicle) will be highly beneficial. Experience working with suppliers and integrating safety requirements into complex system developments would also be advantageous.

Most importantly, we're looking for someone who is passionate about engineering, naturally curious and motivated by the challenge of helping shape the future of vehicle technology. Someone who takes ownership, communicates effectively and enjoys driving continuous improvement whilst working on products admired around the world.

Based in Wellesbourne, this role may occasionally require travel to Aston Martin and supplier sites to support project activities.

This is more than a Functional Safety role, it's an opportunity to influence the technologies that sit behind every driver input, every vehicle response and every confidence-inspiring moment behind the wheel of an Aston Martin.
