Job Purpose:

To be responsible for the on-time delivery of all HV Battery Management System (BMS) hardware and software to achieve vehicle attributes for hybrid and electric vehicles across all AML programmes.

 

Key Duties & Responsibilities:

As Expert, HV Battery Management Systems, you will work with Li-Ion batteries in automotive applications and be responsible for the following activities:
• To define, own and deliver HV BMS hardware and software from concept through to production, including achieving:
- Develop and deliver commodity strategy for HV battery pack BMS hardware and software
- Function: Lead generation and delivery of robust technical specifications and timing plans for RFQ
- Quality: Identify & contain potential quality concerns using engineering quality systems (FMEAs, Robustness Studies, 8Ds, Ishikawa)
- Testing & Development: Sign off for DVPs. Audit the coverage of requirements vs test cases. Contribute to the in-house testing activities. Support the fleet activities. Calibration and debugging of vehicle issues.
• Main point of contact for HV BMS HW and SW for feasibility, functionality and active resolution of technical issues
• Acquiring and evaluating competitor benchmark information to influence concept creation in early project phases
• Coordinating system and supplier comparison studies and evaluating RFQ responses to influence management decisions
• Establish regular design reviews with cross functional teams and support test rig planning and execution
• Cross-functional working with other R&D departments to define associated LV systems to achieve vehicle requirements
• To support relevant requests with Patents and Intellectual Property teams
• Train, coach and present technical information at all levels and share the knowledge throughout AML
• Develop and record best practices and support development of design manuals to handle the Electrified Powertrain requirements of today and the future

 

Qualification & Experience:

The essential areas of previous experience required to undertake this role include:
• Delivery of HV BMS hardware and software for hybrid and/or electric vehicles
• Hands on experience of working with LV and HV electrical and electronic systems
• Knowledge of all relevant vehicle legislation and certification requirements for HV automotive battery packs
• Knowledge of project life cycle management from early R&D to series production
• Leadership of technical teams delivering product development projects to production
• Driving product development issues to a resolution

Preferred areas of experience include:
• Delivery of HV BMS hardware and software for high performance hybrid and/or electric vehicles
• Understanding of hybrid and electric powertrain system functionalities and attributes at vehicle, system and component levels
• Use and specification of test equipment to support electrical and electronic system testing
• Automotive powertrain electrical, electronic and mechanical integration knowledge, including:
- BMS hardware and software calibration
- BMS functions (including communication protocols, fault reactions, safety, charging)
- Interfaces to vehicle modules and diagnostics
- Data analysis of CAN logs to resolve faults
- LV and HV component specification (wiring, fuses, connectors, pin out diagrams)
- Specification of sensors & their positioning
- Electrical and electronic integration of battery pack into vehicle (including Electrical Architecture)
- Design best practices (key parameters of module and pack level packaging, wiring, sensing, mechanical and thermal)
- Ability to take inverter requirements to develop HV harness connections and integration with ePT system
- Ability to propose vehicle HV earthing layout
- Battery pack FMEA
- Cell, module and pack testing, validation and data analysis
- End of Line (EOL) testing and specification
- Supply base and market landscape
- Trends and applicability of new HV battery system technologies including prevalent cell chemistries
• Strong user of MATLAB/Simulink
• Experience with Vector tools
• Experience with CAD (NX, CATIA)
• Responsibility in Formula Student/SAE team
