About the role
At Aston Martin, our Special Vehicles represent the very best of design, performance and craftsmanship. We are looking for a Special Vehicle Project Engineer – exterior and interior to take responsibility for commodity design specification and ensure compatibility across all vehicle systems, attributes and performance targets.
This role is central to delivering unique vehicles that meet exacting standards for quality, cost and timing. You will work closely with internal stakeholders and external partners, leading complex engineering activity from concept through to production and supporting the delivery of vehicles that truly stand apart.
If you enjoy technical leadership, cross‑functional collaboration and solving complex engineering challenges in a creative and fast‑moving environment, this role offers a rewarding opportunity to make a real impact.
What you’ll be doing
In this role, you will lead the implementation of Special Vehicle body exterior and interior designs in line with the agreed vehicle definition, working closely with the Vehicle Line and Design teams. You will own and deliver the commodity strategy, ensuring financial targets are achieved and that components are delivered to the highest quality standards and within programme timing.
You will coordinate and manage failure mode prevention activities, including DFMEA, QHRs, lessons learned and the application of design manuals, while providing surface compatibility feedback to concept and design teams. You will lead commodity design to meet functional targets and define validation plans across virtual and physical phases, including the design and approval of bucks and rigs for form, fit and assembly.
The role involves leading cross‑functional design reviews and managing both virtual and physical build phases, ensuring timely issue identification and resolution. You will oversee the creation, management and release of high‑quality 3D and 2D CAD data, including GD&T, using a mix of internal and external resource, and support the creation of archetypes across multiple platforms.
You will work directly with new and existing suppliers to understand manufacturing feasibility and influence robust design solutions. Benchmarking competitor vehicles and best‑in‑class solutions will form part of your role, with findings clearly communicated to senior leadership. As the releasing engineer, you will be accountable for data quality and governance within the PLM system.
You will be expected to apply structured problem‑solving skills, developing contingency plans to manage cost, timing and delivery challenges, including leading chronic and complex root cause investigations. Presenting technical information clearly and confidently to stakeholders at all levels, including CTO, will be an important part of the role.
You will also support issue resolution throughout prototype, pre‑production and production phases of the vehicle lifecycle, while creating and maintaining high‑quality engineering documentation such as FESO, ensuring strong cross‑functional alignment throughout the product creation process.
What we’re looking for
You will bring experience in body project engineering and the flexibility to adapt your focus to the unique challenges of Special Vehicles. You will have strong knowledge of legal and compliance requirements related to body engineering, along with a broader understanding of wider vehicle requirements.
A degree in engineering is desirable, although exceptional equivalent experience will also be considered. You will have extensive experience delivering products from concept through to launch within a Body Engineering context, supported by a strong understanding of automotive development systems such as specification, releasing, gateways, containments and sign‑off documentation.
You will have in‑depth knowledge of manufacturing processes relevant to your owned commodities, such as metal pressings, castings and extrusions, and a comprehensive understanding of how to apply and interpret CAE analysis to drive design development. Experience in material selection, gap and flush analysis, fixing strategies and working to perceived quality targets is important, along with a strong quality mindset and practical experience of DFMEA, virtual builds and QHRs.
You will be detail‑oriented, confident in decision‑making and comfortable working with complex data. A collaborative and enthusiastic approach is key, with the ability to motivate others and maintain momentum in a changing programme environment. Strong communication skills, both written and verbal, are essential.
